Quick answer: To practise legal reasoning, separate the rule from the facts, identify every condition and justify your answer from the question. The exercise below is fictional study material, not actual law or an official exam question.

The fictional rule

A library charges a late fee only when a book is returned after its due date and the library was open on that due date. Both conditions must be satisfied.

Apply it to three cases

Facts Fee under this rule? Reason
Due Monday, returned Tuesday; library open Monday Yes Late return and open on the due date
Due Monday, returned Tuesday; library closed Monday No The second required condition is missing
Due Monday, returned Monday; library open Monday No The book was not returned after its due date

Change one fact before checking the answer

Take the second case and change only the library's Monday status to open. The answer changes to yes. Changing the student's reason for returning late does not change the answer: the supplied rule contains no exception for that reason.

Explain the wrong option

“Every late return attracts a fee” ignores the second condition. “A good reason always excuses lateness” adds an exception not supplied. Write the missing condition or unsupported assumption beside each wrong option.

Practise for the actual entrance

This is a reasoning exercise, not a claim that CLAT and PU have identical formats. Use official CLAT samples and route-specific PU previous papers separately, following each current prospectus. Explore CLAT coaching in Chandigarh, PU Law entrance coaching in Chandigarh and previous-year papers.
