How CLAT ranks are calculated
CLAT UG is an objective paper with negative marking. Your All India Rank comes from your total marks relative to every other candidate. When two candidates score the same marks, the Consortium applies tie-breaking rules published in that year's notification — traditionally higher marks in Legal Reasoning, then age.
Why coaching ads confuse this
Every result season, dozens of institutes claim "our student is AIR 1". Some claims refer to category ranks, state ranks or different exams entirely. The fix is simple: ask which exam, which year, and which list — then verify on the official website.
What a verified rank claim looks like
A trustworthy institute names the student, the exam, the year and the exact rank. For example, Jury Law Academy, Chandigarh, publishes its results precisely: CLAT 2026 All India Rank 167; three All India Rank 1 achievers in PU 5 Year Law Entrance 2026 (Meghana — B.A. LL.B., Gurwinder — Entrance Merit, Naitik Singla — B.Com LL.B.); AIR 2, 6 and 8 in PU LL.B. 2026; and AIR 1 in PU Law 2025.
Bottom line
AIR 1 is whoever tops the official Consortium merit list this year. Check the source, and judge every coaching claim the same way — named student, named exam, named rank.
